Location

San Diego Botanic Garden

Name

Pine Needle Weaving

Description

Duration: 4 hours, 10am-2pm

Join artist Grace Swanson, as she introduces you to the art of weaving with pine needles. Growing up in Nigeria gave Grace a unique exposure to the creation of useful everyday items using the natural materials that were readily available. She received her Graphic Arts degree from SDSU, pursued a career as a graphic artist, and was a botanical watercolorist before discovering her passion for gourd and pine needle art.

“I love artwork that uses natural materials. It provides a break from the modern era, and creates a grounding sense of things past.”

The project that will be introduced in this class is a small basket made from Long Leaf pine needles, using Crawford waxed Irish linen, small beads, and a stone center starter. Come learn the differences between pine needle types, how to prepare pine needles, and the techniques used to start your own basket. The basket may or may not be finished during class time, but complete instructions will be given on how to finish off the basket at home. As an alternative, students may wish to make a pine needle necklace or a pine needle ornament.

All materials will be provided, however students may wish to bring their own small sharp scissors and small jewelry pliers if they have them. The  instructor will have these items to share.

SDBG follows local safety and health guidelines, and supports staff and visitors who choose to wear masks as they prefer.

Cost: Members $55, non-members $66

Class format: In-person, indoors

Please register by December 12.
